YSL Beauty took PUSS PUSS to Marseille for 24 hours of partying, pétanque and perfume, as its global block party takeover landed at the city’s coolest neighbourhood for one night only. Taking over the community-led La Boule des Vents, the house brought together Marseille’s unmistakable energy, headline sets from Tiakola and Pierre de Maere, and a celebration of MYSLF that blurred the line between beauty event and summer party. Between games of boules and golden hour festivities, PUSS PUSS caught up with Tiakola, French rap star and the face of YSL Beauty’s MYSLF in France, to talk music, style and, of course, the YSL Beauty state of mind.
Beanie Stolper: First of all, congratulations on becoming the new face of the MYSLF fragrance in France. Beyond wearing the scent, what does representing MYSLF mean to you?
T: It is a true source of pride for me. Yves Saint Laurent is a house I have deeply respected and worn for years, long before we ever started working together. To represent MYSLF for YSL Beauty is a way to show that you can stay grounded, true to your journey and your values, while collaborating with one of the most iconic beauty brands in the world. It’s a message of pure authenticity.
BS: The perfume MYSLF is an ode to individuality. Where do you feel most like yourself? Is it behind the decks, traveling from one city to another, or somewhere completely unexpected?
T: To be honest, I try to stay exactly who I am at every moment, without any filters. My daily life is shared between two essential spaces: at home in the quiet, recharging simply with my nephews; and on stage with my audience, where I fully express myself through my music. It’s in this balance between intimacy and connection that I feel truly in my element.
BS: Fragrance is one of the few things that is completely invisible but instantly memorable. What role does fragrance play in your fast-paced daily life?
T: Fragrance has always been a part of my daily routine, it’s an automatic gesture for me. I have a very specific ritual: I always put on perfume at the very last second, once I’m fully dressed and ready to go out or step onto the stage. It’s the final touch of my preparation. I’m definitely not shy with it; I like my fragrance to truly stay with me throughout the day, despite the fast-paced nature of my travels!
BS: We have loved being night owls for decades, but today, daytime events (and YSL Beauty’s boundary-pushing Block Parties) seem just as inspiring. In your opinion, what have we gained with this shift, besides getting to bed earlier?
T: Daytime events bring a beautiful, brighter, and more spontaneous energy, and it’s exciting to see the brand step into that space. But personally, I’m still a night owl at heart. It’s at night, when everything slows down and goes quiet, that I find the peace I need to write, compose, and create. That is my natural creative rhythm. Maybe that will change one day, but for now, the night remains my greatest source of inspiration.
BS: What is the most beautiful or powerful moment you’ve experienced behind a DJ booth that no one in the audience noticed?
T: DJing is a craft I’m just beginning to explore. My most powerful memory so far is the first time I played my track ‘Melo décalé’ as an exclusive during a night at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. The crowd’s reaction was instant. There was such a strong connection, such chemistry, that I got completely swept up in the moment and ended up climbing onto the DJ booth. It was a magical moment of pure improvisation.
BS: YSL Beauty could have hosted this event in Paris, the undisputed European fashion capital, especially with Fashion Week happening at the moment. Instead, the brand chose Marseille. Why do you think this choice is significant?
T: It’s an excellent choice by YSL Beauty. We often get the impression that all major cultural events have to happen in Paris, but creativity and culture belong to everyone. When I go on tour, it is essential for me to visit different cities to connect directly with people. It’s the exact same logic here: it’s important to highlight and celebrate other regions and different energies.
BS: Marseille has such a distinct identity that it’s impossible to mistake it for any other city. It has this cool, laid-back, festive vibe. What do you hope visitors will take away from discovering the city through this event?
T: I simply hope they have an amazing time and feel the incredibly warm welcome of this city. For those discovering Marseille for the first time through this event, I hope they appreciate its unique atmosphere of freedom and togetherness. Marseille has an incomparable energy. There is an incredible passion for music here, and a very strong sense of local pride. It’s a culture in its own right, with its own codes and its own warmth. It’s hard to put into words, it’s a vibrant atmosphere you have to experience firsthand to truly understand.
BS: What is it about YSL Beauty that felt like the perfect fit for this specific moment in your career?
T: Our collaboration came together very naturally, built on mutual respect. YSL doesn’t try to change who I am, they appreciate my music, my world, and my style for exactly what they are. On my end, I deeply respect their creative standards. It’s a sincere exchange and a partnership that allows me to grow while staying completely true to myself.
