Munich, 1976. A city of precision beginning to unravel in the best way. By day, it embodis a modern sophistication. By night, it transforms into disco-lit hedonism, jet-set glamour and a new wave of self-expression. Within this tension – MCM is born.
Founded by Michael Cromer, the brand emerged from a cultural moment defined by movement. A generation was beginning to travel differently, dress differently and express itself more freely, positioning Munich at an unexpected international peak. MCM translated this energy through design, interpreting the Bauhaus principle of “form follows function” through the lens of culture.
MCM has consistently moved with zeitgeist. From Munich to New York, where it became embedded in the visual language of 80s and 90s hip hop, to later finding its home in Asia’s evolving pop-culture, particularly the rise of K-Pop of the 2000s.
At 50, MCM frames this evolution through what it calls “SMART luxury”. A term that, beyond its phrasing, reflects a shift in how luxury is experienced. Today, luxury is no longer static. It exists in motion across cities, time zones and increasingly digital spaces. Design, in turn, is expected to keep up the pace.
